You are correct. There is plenty of conflicting information on this topic. You ask 10 vets you are likely to get 10 different answers. I personally would wait on a large breed dog like yours until she is closer to a year old. Be sure to keep her lean! Vets HATE doing spays on overweight large breed dogs. It makes the surgery SO MUCH HARDER and often it will cost you more money as most clinics charge the surgery by the dog's weight. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is no hard evidence that spaying or neutering closer to 1 year is better...yet. We know that spaying a female dog before too many heat cycles (before 3) is highly (>90%) effective at protecting against mammary cancer (breast cancer). That being said letting a female have 1 heat cycle doesn't lower that number by much. Is easier on the surgeon to spay at 6 months: smaller, less fat, less likely to have bleeding complications. The new evidence is trying to correlate less cancer/bone disease, etc if we allow the animal to fully mature. But like I said the jury is still out. I let me clients decide. Neither option is wrong, personally most don't want to deal with the mess of a heat cycle. Neither would I. So I would spay my dog around 6 months. Let me know if you find this helpful! Have a great day!
