My cat is limping in pain after a fight or bath. Is his paw broken?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 7 months old

My cat is limping on his left hind paw. He can walk but is in obvious pain. He will not allow me to examine his paw. He was in a fight with another cat & I gave him s bath after as he was dirty & had a scratch on his face as a result. I am not sure if he injured his paw during the cat fight or as he tried to escape the bath. I do not see any blood as far as I can tell but it does seem a bit swollen. Could this be s fracture?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, it could be a fracture though other things like a soft tissue injury or even an injury of one of his nails is more likely. I recommend that you have your veterinarian examine him to further assess the possible origin of his lameness. If it is a local wound, then this can be addressed at that time. In the meantime, decrease his activity as much as possible to avoid further trauma of a local injury. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!
