My dogs are coughing mucus and can't sleep. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Female | spayed | 4 years and 5 months old | 65 lbs

Hi, both my dogs have been coughing since last night. They have been coughing up mucus and were unable to sleep through the night because of the coughing. Otherwise, they are both acting normal. They are eating, playing, walking, and show no other symptoms of sickness.

Based on what you are describing I would be concerned about possible kennel cough in your dogs. The likelihood of this would increase if they have been board, groomed, or visited the dog park recently. The has bee a recent outbreak of canine influenza in the US in the past few months. This is a highly contagious respiratory infection that can potentially be fatal. I'm not sure if it is in Canada or not but I wanted to mention it. Oftentimes kennel cough can be self-limiting but sometimes need antibiotics. I would recommend taking at least one of your dog's to the vet to be checked out. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
