My newly adopted, nervous dog won't eat. What should I try next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 56 lbs

We adopted a dog. He is quite nervous, but very affectionate and loving. We suspect shephard beagle mix. 1 1/2 yrs. The question is we have tried warm cold food. Kibble mixed with moist various dog foods, but she shuns the food. We have had her for 8 days now. Stool seems normal in consistancy and frequency. All else seems normal. Shall we wait it out or might you have any ideas?

Hi there and thank you for your post! It sounds like you have tried multiple foods to no avail. I would try a homemade diet and see if she is interested in eating cooked food. The website I recommend you visit to formulate a balanced homemade diet is www.balanceit.com Use the autobalancer to make your own diet. If she is still uninterested in homemade food then I would take her to your vet to have some basic blood work performed to ensure she does not have any systemic illnesses. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. I am also available via consultation if needed.
