My cat is frequently in the litter box but not peeing. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | spayed | 2 years and 11 months old | 6.6 lbs

For the past two days our cat has been going to her litter tray every 30 mins not necessarily peeing and we dont know why. We applied 'advocate' for worms on the back of her neck on Sunday and this started. Please help.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Female cats that repeatedly get in the litter box can have a urinary issue going on, such as a urinary tract infection, bladder stones/crystals, inflammation or an underlying medical issue. I would recommend she be evaluated by her regular veterinarian to try to determine the underlying cause for her behavior, have any necessary testing done (urinalysis, bloodwork), and start any treatment (antibiotics, antiinflammatories) that may be needed. Good luck!
