My dog has diarrhea. Can I crate him overnight without accidents?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 6 months old

I've been keeping my dog in his crate overnight since he destroyed some furniture but he's had diahorrea all day and I'm worried if I keep him in his crate he'll have an accident so I don't know what to do, should I let him loose around the kitchen so he can poop on the hard floor if he needs to?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can keep Ziggy in the crate overnight but I recommend taking him out to potty every 2-3 hours since he has diarrhea. I also recommend taking him to the vet to make sure he doesn't have any pieces of furniture stuck in his GI tract causing the diarrhea. Good luck and kisses to Ziggy!

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Until Ziggy is able to hold his urine through the night, set your alarm to get up one time to let him out. With hold water 2 hours before bedtime. Every dog is different when it comes to house training. I am sure he doesn't want to use the crate as a bathroom. If he is having diarrhea that is hard to control if he has urgency with the diarrhea. Feed him a bland die to of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice until 2 normal stools. If it doesn't improve take him to the Vet for medications. I hope this helps. Good luck!
