Help! My cat is licking her fur off after moving. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 years and 5 months old | 11 lbs

Moved from Indiana to Florida last year. Female cat age 5 started licking fur on belly, front and hind legs. Fur started to grow back and then she started again. Had a shot, helped some and cream med for ear infection. She is still licking and bitting. She is also on flea med.

Excessive grooming can be caused from stress or allergy problems. If you have ruled out fleas and you are keeping her on flea preventative monthly then I would recommend to adding some feliway diffusers to your house. Feliway is a cat pheromone that helps to festers some cats. It doesn't work on all cats. Also, you could talk to your vet about her getting a long acting steroid shot to help her from losing so much hair and causing a skin infection from the excessive grooming. Finally, you could talk to your vet about adding in an anti-anxiety medicine like amitryptilline to see if this will help her as well. I hope this helps!
