My new Lab puppy breathes fast and heaves. Is it stress or serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed

I recently bought a female Labrador puppy and she is currently settling in to her new home. She is absolutely wonderful! However, She is constantly breathing extremely fast. She is also heaving quite a lot without vomiting. At first we thought she may need food and water so we left her a bowl of food and a bowl of water which she did consume but the constant heaving and fast breathing are still present. Is this due to stress? Or could it be something more serious? We are extremely worried!!

Hello. I am sorry that Luna isn't feeling well. If this has been a sudden change, breathing fast and trying to vomit with nothing coming up, or constantly vomiting and bringing up foam, can indicate that maybe she ate something that is stuck in her guts. Puppies do have a faster respiratory rate, so if she is playing, eating, not vomiting, and defecating normally it could be her normal behaviour. If she seems distressed, not playing, weak, or the vomiting is continuing then I would get her to a vet right away. Best of luck with Luna!
