Dog paw red, raw, swollen from licking. What to do before vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 6 years and 4 months old

Hi My dog has been knowing the top of his paw and there is now a red, raw area. It's a bit swollen too. I think he had a bite or sting on Sunday. It looked like it was settling but he's just had a right go at it. Will take him to the vet tomorrow but can I do anything in the mean time?

Hi there and thank you for your post! It certainly looks irritated as if something may have bitten / stung him. While you are waiting for your appointment tomorrow, I would just make sure he is not licking obsessively at the area. I would get a plastic cone for around the head to prevent him licking / chewing the area to prevent further problems. Hoping this resolves soon for Spike! Your vet may prescribe topical ointment and an anti-inflammatory for treatment. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Ouch, poor BJ! That looks swollen and possibly infected to me, so it's a good idea that he is seeing a vet next week for it. To keep him from biting it, I recommend putting an Ecollar on him. I can give you a website that shows you how to make one at home, and you can also try soaking his foot in an Epsom salt bath to see if that helps with the swelling. I hope this helps! http://dogsaholic.com/care/homemade-dog-cone.html
