My dog has a sudden, painful lump on her neck. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 27 days old

I was running my hands through my dogs hair as usual. But I notice something new she had a big lump on the side of her neck. Not sure what it is but it's really big if you look at her you can't really see it but if you touch the spot you can definitely feel it. She didn't have it yesterday it appeared overnight she doesn't seem like she's in pain but when I touch it she just sits there like she's sad so I'm assuming when she's touched there it hurts. Can someone tell me what this might be?

Hi there. A young dog like Penelope who develops lump quickly can be a few different things. Howeve, my first thought is an abscess, It infection. They usually pop up quickly and are tender to the touch. These usually need to be drained and treated with antibiotics. I would recommend that you see your veterinarian for a diagnosis and a plan for treatment. I hope this was helpful!
