How to treat my dog's sore elbow calluses from hard surfaces?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 3 months old | 77 lbs

Hello, I have a 7 year old black lab. He's a big boy who gets very hot in warm weather so likes to lie on the coolest surface he can find which is always hard. Consequently, he has callouses on his elbows but they have become a lot bigger this year and one of them looks sore. I just wondered what Ii could do to alleviate this problem. Is there a spray or some product which could help? Thank you.Judith Burke

Great question! I would look into a cooling dog bed or put a dog bed in front of a fan for him. The callous forms because there isn't any padding between the bone and skin. Ideally sleeping on a soft surface should help protect those areas. There isn't much you can do about healing the callous- it's a difficult area to heal due to lowered blood supply to the area. Focusing on the padding should help overall. Good luck and kisses to Max!
