Dog ate chicken bone days ago, seems fine. Does he need an X-ray?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Cattle Dog | Male | neutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 50 lbs

My dog ate a fried chicken wing (bone and all) three days ago. Everything with him seems completely normal, but I haven't spotted the bone in his stool yet. Is it safe to assume it was broken down in the stomach and has been passed? Or does he need to get x-rayed?

There is a very good chance it has been digested. Continue to watch him closely. If you see any vomiting, not eating, or lethargy, then I would take him to your vet for X-rays. But if he continues to eat and act normal then I would not be concerned! I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can watch him closely for signs of an obstruction such as vomiting, inappetence and abdominal pain. If these are observed, have him examined then. Otherwise, he may be fine. Good luck and have a good night!
