Why is my dog limping on her front leg and paw for two days?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

Terrier has been lame on front leg for almost 2 days now. No sign of any cut or puncture wound. Initially she looked sore from the shoulder (due to her gait and posture) but now she seems to be worried more about her paw. She could be slightly swollen around her metacarpal pad but she is very hair and has black pads so it's hard to tell. Still eating fine and weight bearing slightly but not keen to go down stairs or put heavy weight on ther effected front paw?

She could have an incomplete fracture or some kind of soft tissue injury, like a sprain or strain. Since she has been lame without improvement for a couple of days, I recommend getting her seen by your vet for x-rays and an exam. Until then I recommend confining her to a crate of a small room to keep her as quiet and immobile as possible, to minimize further damage and/or allow it to heal. Treatment will depend on your vet's findings.
