Puppy parasite prevention & vaccines: How long and what's next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 20 days old

For how long do I have to flea and worm my dog for every month? I know it then goes to once a year at a certain age but I don't know at what age that is? He's almost 6 month old and I've been fleaing and worming him every month, also, are there any other vaccinations he should have? He's had both sets from the vet but I don't know if there are any more that he should have, he won't be going into kennels or anything like that I just want to make sure he's protected. Thanks

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In the US we recommend the DHPP vaccine (distemper, parvo, hepatitis and parainfluenza) every 3-4 weeks starting at 6-8 weeks of age until 2 past 12 weeks. That vaccine lasts for a year. Then 1 year later it is given again and is good for 3 years. The Rabies vaccine is given between 12-16 weeks of age, The first rabies is good for 1 year then they are good for 3 years. There are elective vaccines that you can choose from which depends on your dogs life stype: Bordatella, canine flu, leptospirosis, and lyme. We recommend heartworm preventative in the US starting at 8 weeks of age and it be given monthly year round life long. Flea and tick medication is usually in a monthly form-either as a chewable pill or topical application and how long you give it depends on your weather year round. If it never gets cold and fleas and ticks are always present then we recommend you give it monthly year round life long. There is a flea and tick collar that is good for 8 months (Seresto). I do not know of a once year dewormer or flea medication. The heartworm monthly pill has a dewormer in it. As far as deworming monthly we usually stop that when the puppy is a few months old as long as the stool samples are negative for parasite. So maybe drop off a stool sample to be sure there are no worms. I hope this helps.
