How can my strictly indoor cat get FIP if she's never met other cats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 4 days old | 2.2 lbs

Is it possible for my cat to contract FIP If she has had no contact with infected animals and is strictly indoors (from birth). I have many cats but all of them have been strictly indoors for years. Is is possible that I have a carrier among them, Is it possible that i brought it home from touching another cat?

FlP itself is actually not contagious from one cat to another. FIP is a mutated virus. The virus before it mutates is contagious but isn't problematic. Also it is rare for it to mutate. Once a cat has an active form of FIP, that disease itself isn't contagious. So it is possible for her to contract FIP if she has the other virus inside of her and it suddenly mutates and starts causing issues. You likely did not bring it home touching another cat. I hope this helps.
