My ball python was bitten by a rat. Should I worry about infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a ball python, I've had him for a little over two years and today is the first time I've ever had his food bite him. (He won't eat frozen rats, only live ones) he's jumpy when I touch near the area. Should I worry?

Wounds in snakes tend to get infected and either do not heal or heal very slowly, if you believe that the bite wound is starting to look worse within a few days, do not wait too long and take him to an exotic vet specialist in order to get it checked and treated with antibiotics.
