My dog is throwing up yellow and lethargic. Should I go to ER vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Female | spayed | 1 year and 7 months old | 50 lbs

Sadie has been throwing up since yesterday. Yesterday, last night and this morning it has been yellowy phlegmy looking. Just now, she threw up all of her breakfast. She has been pretty lethargic, although we went for a walk last night and she played in the back yard afterward and she can be enticed to play now but won't continue. We have an appointment at a new vet on 8/9 for a well check. Should we wait or go to the emergency vet? Or is there something we should be doing until our appt?

If Sadie has been vomiting for longer than 24 hours, I would recommend that she see an emergency veterinarian. Common causes of vomiting in young dogs include dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, among others. Considering that she is a young dog and a breed that is commonly found chewing on things they shouldn't, I would be very concerned about a complete or partial intestinal blockage. I would not wait until the 9th for evaluation. The vet may recommend diagnostics like abdominal x-rays, ultrasound, or bloodwork to determine the most appropriate treatment.

Aw I'm sorry to hear your puppy isn't feeling well! Because she is so young, is lethargic and vomiting I think it's best if you have her examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Puppies are notorious for eating things they shouldn't so I'd want to rule out an intestinal blockage or toxin ingestion. You can try to withhold food for 6 hours and then offer a bland meal of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice. However, I'm concerned that in your puppy's case she may still continue to vomit so my strong suggestion is to have her checked out by a veterinarian. After an exam is done X-rays may be necessary to rule out an intestinal blockage and medication can be administered to stop her from vomiting. She may also require supportive care to prevent dehydration. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope your puppy is feeling better soon!
