My dog strained to pee frequently, now seems fine. Is it a UTI?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 months and 14 days old | 30 lbs

Dog was peeing/trying to pee frequently for about 24 hrs. If we were out for ten minutes she would try about 3-4 times with very little or none coming out. And stretching her back almost every time. Thought it was for sure a UTI and was working to schedule a vet appt. Today she seems fine. Any thoughts?

Poor Shelby! Frequent urination and straining is certainly not normal, and I agree with your concern - a UTI seems possible, as well as crystals in the urine or bladder stones. Even though she seems fine today, I would still take her to the vet for an exam and urinalysis to assure that everything looks okay. Better to catch and start treating a UTI sooner rather than later! I hope that all goes well!

I would be worried about a urinary tract infection and possible bladder stones in your dog. I would recommend taking her, and a sample of her urine if you can catch it, to the vet to have her checked out. If she has an infection she will need to be on antibiotics. If she has stones, depending on how bad they are, she may need surgery to remove them.
