There are collars that have a small aerosol spray canister attached to them that give a short burst of a citronella spray to deter the dog from barking. Some people find this more appealing than the shock collar. I have used a shock collar in my own dog and I can honestly say it is not that bad. It does not hurt the dog, it just gives them an odd sensation. And most dogs will learn very quickly not to bark when they have the collar on. It took my dog less than a day to get used to it. He only barked once or twice before he learned to not bark while he had it on. It was a lifesaver for us! But you should choose whatever you feel most comfortable with. What works for one dog may not work for another. I hope this helps. Good luck.
