Why does my cat's sneezing and discharge return after antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Norwegian Forest Cat | Male | neutered | 7 years and 6 months old

Over the last 6 months my cat has had recurrent sneezing with nasal discharge. It clears up with antibiotics and then comes back within 2/3 weeks. No other symptoms. Otherwise he is extremely healthy. He is bright eyed and bushy tailed and has a very good appetite. The vet seems at a loss.

Chronic nasal discharge could be a sign of chronic rhinitis due to a viral infection, resistant bacterial infection, tooth abscess, nasal foreign material, or a nasal tumor or polyp. Each of these could result in a secondary bacterial infection which might explain response to antibiotics. The next step might be to see if your veterinarian can refer you to an internal medicine specialist for something like rhinoscopy and/or a CT scan of the skull. Sometimes testing for viral and other infectious diseases is also recommended.
