Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 months and 3 days old | 5 lbs

When does soft stool in a cat become a concern? Cat is 4 months and is still eating and drinking well, and is treated with same flea/worm treatment and is indoor cat, sibling in same household is fine.

Hi there. Soft stool is concerning in a younger cat if it persists longer than a day or two. This can be caused by intestinal parasites, dietary intolerance or sudden diet change, or bacterial imbalance. Even though his sibling is normal, it would be a good idea to have a fecal sample evaluated for parasites and bacteria. It may be that he needs to temporarily switch to a bland food or needs a probiotic supplement. Or he may need a prescription medication. Over time, runny stool in young kittens can lead to weight loss and problems using the litter box. I hope he feels better soon!

I would just keep a close eye on Lola and see if it goes back to normal tomorrow. You can add a teaspoon of canned pumpkin to her food twice a day for more fiber, and probiotics are good, too. Common causes of diarrhea in a kitten includes food intolerance or allergies, intestinal parasites, bacterial or viral gastroenteritis, etc. If it isn't getting better in a few days, you may need to call your vet for further advice.
