Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 13 years old
Hello, I have a senior Maine Coon who has become quite skinny over the course of the last year. When I pet him his vertebrae and hips are prominent. He shows no signs of illness - no vomiting, no lethargy - and lab work at his recent checkup was completely normal. Is this just a getting old and having a slower metabolism issue? If so, is there something I can do about it? Should I buy food with specific ingredients or from a specific brand?

Actually when the metabolism slows they get heavier, not skinnier so I don't think that is what is going on. You said all labwork was normal but was a thyroid level checked? Hyperthyroidism (high thyroid levels) is a very common occurrence in older cats and they can start out by losing weight as the only sign. If a thyroid level was not run, I suggest you call your vet and ask for that test. It a thyroid level was checked and found to be normal then I would try switching his diet to something higher in calories than what he is currently eating. No specific ingredients are needed. Just check the bags of food and the nutritional label should tell you how many calories per cup of food (if dry food) or how many calories per can of food (wet food). If you want to repost a question about how much Justin weighs and what his current diet is that might be more helpful. It would be easier to recommend something. I hope this helps. Best wishes to you and Justin! He is handsome!
