My rabbit ate too many pellets and is bloated. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 20 days old | 2.5 lbs

When I first got my bunny he wouldn't eat his pellets only hay, and now that I've had him for a couple of weeks I tried to give him pellets, he ate it all and he seemed to enjoy them. But he's been feeling bloated ever since i gave him the pellets. What could be wrong with him ?

He may have eaten too many pellets. Timothy hay or similar grasses should make up the majority of his diet. He can eat as much hay as he wants. Pellets should be limited to 1/8 cup or less daily. Do not feed any more pellets for now. Monitor for lethargy, diarrhea/soft stool or loss of appetite. He should be examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating rabbits if he develops any of those symptoms.
