My senior dog has sudden liquid diarrhea with blood and mucus. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 12 years and 6 months old | 18 lbs

My 13 y/o Dixie has intermittent sudden onset of liquid diarrhea. No other symptoms observed. Been on same food for years. Couple spots of blood, also mucus. Other Dixie fine. Last couple days. Give bowel rest for 24h than rice. What could be wrong?

It can be an infection or stress related colitis. Sometimes food can do it if it was new bag. Some older dogs can get an inflammatory bowel. With blood and mucous it is best if you have her checked by your vet to get prescription medication to clear it up or manage it since it is not responding to the bland diet
