My cat licks and pulls hair, has bumps. Is it allergies or fleas?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Male | neutered | 8 years and 6 months old | 15 lbs

My persian cat constantly licks & pulls hair, mainly in the back/hind leg area. He also has bumps along his back & head. I've tried allergy med, flea treatments, steroid spray, that all works for a couple days only. I can't afford a vet now, so looking for some advice. Thanks

Poor Fred. It sounds like an allergy. You can give 1/2 of an adult 25mg Benadryl twice a day every day if this helps with the itching. Also, make sure you are using a high quality monthly flea preventative from your vet. Most of the OTC flea medicines do not work well. Also, be sure to treat your house and yard for cleans if necessary to get rid of the fleas. Fleas don't live on the pet but in the environment. They only get on the pet for a feeding then jump off. Finally, if he isn't improving I would try to get him to the vet as he may need a steroid shot or some other type of allergy medicine and/or antibiotics to help him feel better. I hope this helps!
