My dog ate homemade borax ant bait and is throwing up. Is she okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | spayed | 10 years and 5 months old | 10 lbs

Will my dog be okay if she accidentally ate my homemade ant bait I used? The mixture had about 2 tablespoons of borax in it and the rest was made with water, syrup, and white sugar. I poured the mixture into a plastic takeout lid and it appears she has drank half of the mixture. Will she be okay? After ingestion she's thrown up 5 different times within the past 6-7 hours.

The ingestion of small quantities of Borax can cause vomiting to occur. In large quantities it can cause kidney damage. It is difficult to know exactly how much was ingested since it was diluted in the water, therefore I would recommend having her evaluated by her veterinarian for blood work to monitor her kidney values. If these begin to elevate then it is possible she consumed enough to cause kidney damage. An anti-nausea medication will also help to decrease the nausea/vomiting associated with the Borax.
