Dog ate chocolate and plastic wrap. When should I call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 6 months and 4 days old | 104 lbs

My dog just recently ate a plate of brownies and apparently ate the saran rap that was covering them as well! We already found the Saran rap in his stool yesterday and he has been acting normal! But if for any reason he wouldn't be acting normal or he still has some in him.. what are some signs that we would need to take him to the vet?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think Pilot is a lucky dog! The life threatening signs of chocolate toxicity are likely not going to happen (increased heart rate, heart arrhythmias, hyperactivity, seizures, death). The later onset problems with eating too much chocolate are gastro-intestial upset and pancreatitis. Both of which can show up as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and not wanting to eat. As for the saran wrap possibly causing an obstruction, it's possible. Watch for vomiting, not eating, lethargy. Bring him in if any of those signs start. Good luck!

If you notice any vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, decreased appetite, tremors, hyper activity, or shaking then you should take him to a vet for treatment. At this point, I don't think you will see any toxic effects (shaking, tremors, increased heart rate, seizures) of eating chocolate but definitely could see some gastrointestinal effects (vomiting, diarrhea). It is possible the saran wrap could cause an obstruction but it is a good sign that you already found some in his stool. Hopefully he will pass the rest without a problem. Hope he enjoyed his brownies!
