Why is my puppy's poop gray with mucus after eating something?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 6 months and 25 days old | 55 lbs

My almost 8 month old puppy went to the bathroom this morning and it was regular except for the gray mucus on top of the stool. What can this be? He is acting normal! He likes to eat stuff, a month ago had surgery because he ate a sock. The sock was stuck in his intestines. He has been doing good. He did throw up once yesterday, and looked like he ate some kind of rubber, not sure what!

HI, thanks for using Petcaoch! Very interesting color! Mucous indicated inflammation in the colon. Which is Boomers case is likely from eating something he shouldn't have. I recommend feeding him a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice as small frequent meals. Feed about 1 cup per 20lbs per day until 1-2 normal stools. If he continues to vomit or starts to not eat I recommend you see your Vet due to his history! Good luck!
