My new rescue puppy growls when guarding food and toys. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 4 months and 16 days old

I have a rescue puppy from romania and she has been with us a week. She can become slightly aggressive and possessive of food or certain items. She growls if you try to take them off her and she greeds badly. Ive tried telling her off/ exchanging the item for treats but she still continues to growl. What is the best action to take?

It sounds like Luna has some resource guarding. That's a normal behavior in dogs, but it needs to be managed so that you can keep her safe when she gets things she shouldn't. I would continue to offer her treats (better than what she has) in exchange for the item. Given that she's only 4 months old it will take some time but be consistent!
