Why is my dog vomiting and having diarrhea but still acting normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 110 lbs

Hi! My Great Dane was just taken to the vet about two weeks ago to get caught up on his shots. He also had fleas up until a couple days ago and now he is having diarrhea in the house, which is something he NEVER does, and is vomiting not even 5 minutes later. Sam, my Dane, still acts normal and wants to eat his food if I put something else with it, but I'm worried.

I am concerned about this amount of vomiting and diarrhea. Since the vaccines were 2 weeks ago they are not likely the cause of the symptoms. I would withhold food (small amounts of water are ok) for 12-24 hours and see how he does. If the symptoms continue after fasting then I would recommend having Sam checked out by your vet. They may need to run blood work or take X-rays to determine what is going on. Your vet can also give Sam so medication to help stop the vomiting and some antibiotics to help clear up the diarrhea.
