What caused my budgie's sudden death and how can I prevent it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female

We bought a budgie parakeet a week ago. She's been a good singer, friendly, and happy. Today she started to get sleepier and sleepier, when all of a sudden, she couldn't stand. We took her to an animal hospital, and she was was really limp for most of the trip (20 minutes or so), then began convulsing. We arrived and she started to get even more limp, the said it was too late and she died. What causes this? How can I prevent it from happening again? I spent $200 at the vet!

Unfortunately i do not know what she died from, these are very general symptoms of a very sick bird, these same symptoms will occur with almost any severe disease. it could have been an infection or maybe something she ingested. for the next bird make sure you disinfect the cage if you are going to use the same cage, try avoiding metallic toys and try feeding her bird fruit pellets only.
