Why is my parakeet suddenly lazy, not eating, and acting sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | unspayed

My pet parakeet is acting very strange. I've had a feeling that she was sick but recently went on an 8 day vacation after my suspicions. Now that I'm back, she seems very lazy. She doesn't want to get out of her cage, she very rarely flys and speaks, and seems to be a different bird. She is no longer eating and looks very sickly (she is however also starting to molt), but its beyond the sickly looks of a molting parakeet. I'm also not sure what these things are above the cere. Help!

I would definitely recommend taking Ohana in to see a vet as soon as you can. All the signs you are describing sound like she is a very sick bird. And since birds are so tiny it is very dangerous when they quit eating. Your vet may recommend doing some blood work to find out exactly what is going on. Good luck!
