My cat is throwing up foam with blood and not eating. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 6 years and 1 month old

Hi, I am really concerned about my cat. Yesterday she hasn't been eating much, and later threw up liquid with little bits of the food she ate. Today she hasn't eaten at all and been throwing up white foam. The third time she threw up today there was a pinkish, light red tint with the foam. I didn't see her drink water either. I just really want to know what's going on with her.

It sounds like your cat Bella is having a bout of gastritis, or an inflammation of the lining of the stomach. I would guess that the pinkish liquid you saw maybe a little bit of blood coming from her stomach wall. Sometimes these cats can get over at episode of gastritis on your own but sometimes I need anti-nausea medication and antibiotics to help them. If it's been over 24 hours I would recommend taking her to see your vet so she can be evaluated. Your vet may recommend antinausea medication and possibly fluids to help her get back to her normal self.

Poor Isobel! I'm very concerned that she is vomiting red, as that indicates there is blood in her vomit which makes it a medical emergency. She could have a foreign body, may have eaten something rotten or toxic causing her to vomit blood, stomach ulcers, trauma to the GI tract, or rat bait toxicity. She needs veterinary treatment now to diagnose what is causing her vomiting so she can be treated. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

It sounds as Beyaz is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.
