My puppy's spay incision looks open. Is it splitting or infected?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 months and 7 days old | 51 lbs

I'm concerned my puppy's spaying incision is splitting open. Is this just from the scab falling off or is this a concern? She was spayed last Thursday June 29th

It looks like the skin has healed but a small piece of suture is causing a small infection. I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian for antibiotics. Continue to restrict her activity and keep an e-collar on to prevent licking.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It does look like her incision has opened. It is likely only the skin and doesn’t appear to be infected. I recommend gently cleaning it with a mild soap and water one time (no peroxide) and put an e-collar on her so she doesn’t lick it and cause an infection. Call your vet when they open and discuss this with them; they will likely want to see her and they may prescribe antibiotics. Good luck and kisses to your pup!
