My dog's ear has black wax and she's scratching. Is it an infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 4 years and 2 months old | 9.4 lbs

I have a 4 yr old York is who's been scratching her left ear and shaking her head like something is in her ear. A few moments ago I held her down and shone a flashlight in it. It has a lot of blackish wax in it. What's the best way to remove it?

It looks like she has an ear infection. You could clean her ear with an ear cleaner for dogs but she should see a vet for medications. She will need an antibiotic and/or an anti-fungal, depending on the type of infection. Your vet can do a cytology and then prescribe the best medications to treat.
