My dog has a growth on her lip, vet's closed. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 28 lbs

Today I found some sort of growth on the inside of my dog's lip. It's July 4th and my vet's office is closed. Does anyone know what this growth is? Picture attached. She's a 1.5 yr old beagle mix, possibly with boxer.

That seems a papilloma virus type of growth. Papillomatosis is contagious in nature and is caused by the canine oral papillomavirus. There are instances where the papillomatosis can progress, causing common forms of skin cancer. This kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors.
