My puppy ate a piece of fabric and now has diarrhea. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 8 month Aussie ate a small piece of fabric (crotch of my underwear) monday morning. Everything was normal (eating, drinking, playful) until diarrhea this morning. Should I be concerned? He has pooped normal since, but I live on a farm, and between the leaves and other dog, it's hard to sift through his poop. He tends to shred things he chews up into small pieces.

The diarrhea could be due to eating your underwear, so there is a chance there could be an obstruction, but it could also be that it upset his stomach. I would try a home remedy first before worrying, and if it doesn't work, I'd take him into the vet. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or protracted vomiting. A small piece of fabric should pass eventually. The diarrhea, in the absence of other symptoms can be managed with a 24 hour fast followed by a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. See your vet if other symptoms develop or if the diarrhea does not resolve.
