When is the best time of the year to desex/spay a 3Ibs female Maltese? Any advice on how to help her with skin rash?The vet recommended a shampoo. Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 5 months old | 4 lbs

The best time to spay Bella is before she goes her their heat cycle or 2 months after her heat cycle.. The time of the year has no relevance. Skin rashes are caused by several different things, so treatment depends entirely on the cause of the skin rash. Environmental, food, or flea allergies are the usual culprits for skin rashes. So the first piece of advice is to get Bella on a high quality monthly flea preventative (i.e. Bravecto, Nexgard, Trifexis-heartworm and flea preventative). Then investigate whether she has an environmental or food allergy and eliminate the allergen. While investigating the cause of the allergy, the best course of treatment to calm the skin is either a steroid or immunomodulator drug such as Apoquel (highly recommended). Anti-histamines (i.e. Benadryl) can be tried as well but are not always helpful with pets because they just don't seem to be strong enough to control true Canine Allergic Dermatitis. 1 other helpful treatment for Bella is to give her daily fish oils (pet formulated from your local pet store) which has natural anti-inflammatory properties.
