My new puppy's poop is mushy with blood clots. Is this serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 2 days old

Eats, drinks, playful, but last night(first night here) pooped in house and left blood clots. Not diarrhea, most just mushy, not firm. Serious?

Not unless it persists or Diamond develops other symptoms (vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, etc). Submit a stool sample to you veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites. She may need a dewormer. Any new pet should be examined by your vet within 72 hours of arriving home anyway to confirm good health and/or to treat any pre existing conditions. Adding a teaspoon of plain canned pumpkin (NOT pie filling) per 10lbs body weight to the meals once or twice daily may help firm up the stool.

It could just be from diet change or stress from her change in environment. She could also have a parasite or a viral infection. If it continues, she becomes lethargic, or starts vomiting than she needs to be seen by a vet right away. Your vet can test a stool sample to help determine the cause and then rescribe medications to help treat.
