My cat's eye is shut after being outside. Does he need a vet now?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 1 month old

Hi, My cat managed to get out tonight, and has just come back. He seems to be having trouble with one of his eyes, not being able to open it. I can't see anything in it, and have giving it a clean. Should I go to the vet tonight or wait to see if it has improved by morning? Thank you in advance!

Poor guy. If the eye is not ruptured or oozing out blackish or reddish material then he should be fine to wait until morning to see a vet. He possibly has a corneal ulcer or scratch due to trauma when he was outside. If this is confirmed by your vet, then topical antibiotic ointment is typically the only treatment required to resolve this.

Any eye injury (or potential injury) should be addressed immediately by a veterinarian. Alladin may have a corneal injury which would be difficult to see with the naked eye. The vet can use a corneal stain (fluorescein) to diagnose injury. Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent rubbing or pawing until he sees the vet.
