My dog ate two grapes today and I've heard they are very toxic to dogs. Will he be okay? Is there anything I can do to help him? He's very old, too.

You are correct that grapes are toxic to dogs. If he ate them within the past two hours, you can take him into your vet now to induce vomiting. If it's been longer than two hours, I would monitor him for signs of grape toxicity. These signs include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy, weakness, abdominal pain, dehydration, passing only a small amount of urine, or not passing any urine at all. If you see any of those signs, you need to take Coco into the vet right away.

Yes they are toxic and unfortunately the toxic dosage is unknown. A check up is needed as signs can come up even 24-48hours after ingestion. Fluid therapy, gastroprotectants and activated charcoal are needed even as a prevention of possible acute kidney damage.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Oliver. There is no known safe amount of grapes for dogs to eat. There is always a possibility of kidney failure. The (major) problem with treating these guys is that you don't know if it's going to cause kidney failure until it's too late. They don't act different or ill until they are life threateningly ill. The only way to treat them is to go to the clinic, make him vomit if it was within an hour or maybe 2, then keep him on IV fluids for a day or two. And some dogs can eat grapes without any problems. We just don't know how each individual will react. So I know that's not the most helpful answer, but that's the more accurate one we have. You can chance it and do nothing and there is a good chance everything will be fine, or you can take him to the clinic immediately for hospitalization. Good luck!

Dogs can experience kidney failure secondary to grape ingestion. Some of them seem to be OK with eating grapes but many are not, and we don't understand why. I would strongly recommend that you take Serafina in to see a vet today to run some baseline blood work and see if there is any kidney damage present. Most internal medicine specialists recommend 2 - 3 days of hospitalization with fluid support even if kidney values are normal after grape ingestion, since the effects may not be seen for several days.

Grape intoxication Unfortunately the ingestion of just few grapes can be toxic to dogs. If you suspect that your pet has eaten any grapes or raisins, but the quantity is unknown, please contact your veterinarian immediately. Since there are still many unknowns associated with this toxicity, it is better not to take any chances. The most common early symptom of grape or raisin toxicity is vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, excessive urination or lethargy. The goal of treatment is to block absorption of the toxins and prevent or minimize damage to the kidneys.
