Poor pup! If he's keeping the eye closed or if the [eye is red](https://www.petcoach.co/article/why-are-my-dogs-eyes-red) and there's discharge coming from it, it's likely that he either has an [eye infection](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/conjunctivitis/) or an injury of some kind to the eye, such as a corneal scratch or ulcer. I would recommend having him examined by a vet or [veterinary ophthalmologist](https://www.acvo.org/) as soon as you can, since he will may prescription eye drops to treat the problem. Eyes are delicate, so the sooner he gets an exam and proper medication, the better - some problems can cause permanent damage or vision loss if they aren't treated promptly.

Oh no, poor Ollie! This could be caused by an eye infection, trauma to the eye, or a foreign body trapped in his eye. Because the eye is such a delicate and important structure, any eye problems is considering an emergency. Leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss, so I would Ollie seen by a vet ASAP to have his eye examined and treated.

Poor Bandit! It sounds like he probably has an eye infection, or even an injury to his cornea like a scratch or ulcer causing him to keep the eye closed. You can certainly use warm saline eye wash or plain warm water to help clean the eyes and make them more comfortable, but he will need to see a vet as soon as you are able to take him. Your vet can use a special stain to check for any injury or foreign body in the eye, and will prescribe eye drops to treat the infection if one is present. It's important to have eye problems like this treated promptly since permanent damage and even vision loss can result from delaying too long, so I would recommend having him seen tomorrow morning if at all possible.

I am so sorry to hear that Jax cannot open his eye, and it seems red and has discharge. Start by placing an e-collar or cone on Jax to prevent scratching or rubbing. Because eye concerns with dogs, such as infections, corneal ulcerations, cataracts and glaucoma, can progress rapidly in dogs I would have him examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the issue. The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian. Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointments. This can lead to permanent damage and unnecessary pain or discomfort. I hope this answer was helpful and that Jax feels better soon. Warmest regards to you both!
