An ear infection in a dog is usually either caused by bacteria or yeast in the ear that becomes overgrown and causes inflammation, debris and pain. It is usually in the outer ear but can cause damage to the eardrum and go into the middle and inner ear.

It is an accumulation of either bacteria, yeast or mites in the ear due to an underlying disorder which can be allergies, narrow ear canals (which creates a moist and humid environment suitable for yeast to grow), or even underlying thyroid disease. We can diagnose what type of infection is present by taking samples of the ear discharge and looking at it under the microscope at your vet clinic. Once the type of infection is found it can be treated with prescription ear medication and a cleaner. I hope this helps and best wishes with Max if he does in fact have an ear infection.
