Why is my recently adopted dog coughing, shaking, and not eating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 7 months old | 39 lbs

My 3 year old dog is coughing, shaking, and doesn't have much of an appetite. I just adopted him about 10 days ago. Him not eating or drinking much is really worrying me. What could be wrong?

This sign could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection or more specifically to a tracheitis (inflammatory, allergic, infective). Given the systemic signs fever may be present. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.
