My dog has itchy, bleeding bumps after a new bath soap. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 3 years old | 60 lbs

My Pitbull was given a bath about four days ago with a new soap that is not usually used as well as "dog perfume". The next day she had raised bumps on her back that itch and bleed. I believe these to be hives. What should I do? It has been four days and they still have not gone away.

I would give her 75mg of Benadryl twice a day to help with the hives. She may also need a steroid prescribed by your vet as sometimes the Benadryl isn't strong enough for this types of reactions. Your vet will be able to examine her and make sure there isn't a secondary bacterial infection. If so, she may also need antibiotics. I hope this helps!
