Why is my cat peeing outside the litter box with sweet-smelling urine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 14 years and 9 months old | 15 lbs

Have two cats. Not sure which one is peeing outside litter box always on floor by kitchen sink. The urine is barely noticeable for it is a very light yellow almost white. It does not have the usual strong smell but is rather faint and a little sweet smelling. They are both short haired cats. One is average weight and totally black. The other over weight some what and is a Calico cat. The Black cat is 16 yrs old and the Calico 15 years old. The Calico cat has always had double jointed like hips.

Inappropriate urination such as you describe often indicates a medical problem. A dilute, sweet smelling urine may be associated with diabetes. Diabetes in cats is more commonly seen in overweight, middle-aged cats. I would recommend that you separate the cats try and determine which one is peeing inappropriately. Once you have figured this out, I would take that cat to be seen by your veterinarian. They will likely recommend blood work and a urinalysis to determine what may be causing the urinary issues. Diabetes is quite treatable in cats and in some cases, treatment can lead to remission in which the diabetes resolves. Getting treatment sooner rather than later is associated with a better chance of obtaining remission in diabetic cats.
