My dog has watery diarrhea, grass, reddish stool. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 5 months old | 65 lbs

My dog was rescued from Romanian shelter 6m ago. She was skinny and has been gaining weight and been well. Today she has passed watery diorrhoea and grass (we have a garden but I hadn't seen her eating grass ) we're going through a bit of a heatwave and all my dogs are hot. She's a large breed Carpathian shepherd though. She's off her food and no vomiting just watery stool with possible blood (looks reddish ) and the grass. Do I need a vet? She's panting a lot shaded and a fan on her

Sorry to hear that Bella Boo isn't feeling 100%. As long as the diarrhea hasn't been going on for very long, you can first try fasting her for about 24 hours. After the fast, feed a bland diet of boiled chicken / hamburger + rice for about 2-4 days, before gradually resuming her normal diet. In addition, you can add a probiotic designed for dogs such as Fortiflora to the food. This can help right the ship in terms of the good bacteria in the intestinal tract. I would also grab a fecal sample and bring it in to your veterinarian. A GI parasite can definitely cause the problem you are reporting. If the diarrhea doesn't clear up or it continues to worsen, make an appointment to see your vet. Hope this helps!
