Why is my kitten straining in the litter box but nothing comes out?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 3 months and 19 days old | 2 lbs

My cat Opal has trouble using the bathroom , she will try to go anywhere including her litter and nothing will come out . She will stay in her little for up to 10 minutes and nothing . She's eating and she drinks lots of water so I'm unsure what's wrong . She's 3 months and we're taking her on a trip soon so I want to make sure she is okay .

Poor Opal! It sounds like you need to take her in to your vet to have her urine checked for possible infection and have her checked also for possible constipation or diarrhea. Constipation and diarrhea can look the same as animals strain with both conditions. Intestinal parasites in young kittens can present this way, so having your vet check her stool as well would be a good idea. If she is drinking excessively, this could be an indication of a kidney problem and may require blood work. I would take her in to see what tests, if any, need to be done on her and what course of treatment will get her back on track as soon as possible.
