My new kitten won't eat or drink and is always sleeping. Is he sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My kitten doesn't want to eat or drink anything. He just sleeps day and night. I tried to bottle feed him milk but he wouldn't take it. I just got him 4 days ago. What could be the problem?

It's possible your kitten could have an underlying illness or some digestive upset. If he is refusing to eat or drink and is very lethargic, it would be best to take him into your vet ASAP for a full exam to find the cause.

Pisu should be examined by a veterinarian Antibiotics may be indicated for upper respiratory infection. Keep him warm and feed a kitten milk replacer or a slurry or gruel made by mixing kitten food and a kitten milk replacer. Serve the food warm or mix in a teaspoon of baby food to stimulate the appetite. Keep his eyes and nose clear. If he still doesn't eat, have him rechecked by your veterinarian.
