My cat won't eat his renal diet. How can I get him to eat normally?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years and 1 month old | 12 lbs

My 3 year old cat was on good quality wet chicken food & eating well. Since 15 days he started vomiting within 5 min of eating 1 spoon Vet did blood test revealed all values perfect except only creating just at top limit of normal value. We gave antacid, liver n kidney support tablets & put him on renal dry food. This bought down all bloddtest values to normal. Still he doesn't eat . He eats a fist of renal dry food over 6 hrs twice per day. How long will take to eat normally?

It may be that Oreo just isn't thrilled with the new food. Some renal diets do come in a canned/wet variety, so seeing if your vet carries that may encourage him to eat more. You can also try adding a little water to soften the kibble and warming it up in the microwave. Cats tend to be smell driven, so making the food smelly and warm may entice his appetite. if he continues to not want to eat, or is losing weight/showing other symptoms of illness, bringing him back to the vet for a recheck is best.
